Christmas Orienteering Game
This game will last approx 30 minutes depending on the speed and team work of your pupils. Can be set up inside a school hall or outside on a playground or school field. You may wish to laminate the ppt pages once printed. Pupils can play either individually, in pairs or small teams.
How to play:
Give pupils a starting answer (left words) and they write this down on their sheet of paper (clipboards optional). Give these randomly to avoid pupils following each other round.
Pupils find their starting word on the left hand side and look to the right for their next clue word. Remind them that it is a race so they may want to run.
Once answer word is found they need to write this down then look to the right hand side for their next clue word.
You may wish to get pupils to come back to check their answer order with you every 5 words or so to ensure they are doing it correctly.
Pupils have completed the game if they complete the list of 35 words in the SAME order. There is only one correct order and it will work for all pupils/teams.

Maths Amazon rainforest data
Children will investigate data and statistics.
The data shows the rainfall and temperature in Manaus (central Amazon) compared to London.
Pupils could use the data to draw a line graph/bar chart etc.
There are also questions that pupils must answer linked to the data.
This activity links closely to the cross curricular theme - Amazon Rainforest.
Maths calculating time intervals with Amazon rainforest link
Links to cross curricular theme - Amazon rainforest.
This is a challenging maths activity where pupils have to calculate how long the journey takes from Manchester airport to Manaus airport in the Amazon rainforest.
Pupils will have to calculate up to 3 different flights per journey and include any layover or connection times in their final total journey time answer.
On the activity worksheet, there are six different journeys all with the same destination. Pupils could be further challenged by calculating which journey is the quickest/slowest and order them.
The flight times have been taken from the internet and were accurate on 22nd April 2017.
We have been reading Journey to the River Sea in class and Maia (main character) in the book travels from England to Manaus, so this activity is a great link.
Amazon Rainforest themed coordinates activity
Children will investigate, read and plot coordinates on two quadrant grids.
This activity links closely to the cross curricular theme - Amazon Rainforest.
Rainforest Art & Design 6 week unit of work
6 week unit of work linked to curriculum theme - Amazon Rainforest.
Throughout this theme, children will explore the work of artists such as Henri Rousseau and contemporary artist Ruth Daniels, to further their understanding in geography and the rainforest regions of South America. These artists give excellent opportunities to discuss composition; where the whole picture is filled with foliage, to compare the observational skills of the artists; to express preferences and extend the use of artistic language and vocabulary.
London Marathon Maths Lesson
Long multiplication lesson suitable for years 4,5 and 6.

The main activity is to work out the total running time for different running paces between 14 to 3 mins per mile. This includes multiplying decimals by up to two digits.
Challenge: 3km is a good distance to run. This is the same as 1.9 miles. Calculate the total time for each of the paces.
Science Year 5 - 6 week unit on Life cycles of plants and animals, linked with Amazon Rainforest
6 week unit of work linked to curriculum theme - Amazon Rainforest.
National Curriculum 2014 links
By the end of the unit, pupils should be able to describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird and to describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals.
The flipchart includes links to all videos by clicking on the images. The worksheets and activities are stored in the flipchart so clicking on the images will open the files. I have also added them as files in the download.
Learning Intentions:
To know about animal life cycles
To research Amazon wildlife life cycles
To be able to plan a fair germination investigation
To know that flowering plants reproduce
To be able to design a very dangerous plant
To know about naturalists and behaviourists - David Attenborough and Jane Goodall
Design Technology 6 week unit on Mechanical Toys, focus on cams
Intended outcome for the 6 week unit of work:
Pupils will design and make a toy using mechanical cams.
They will investigate existing simple automata toys and other mechanical toys. They will evaluate them and look at how they work. Using this knowledge, they will design their own prototype – edit and improve it, then present it to the class. They will consider buyer and use of the product in their design. They will then make their final mechanical product.
6 week plan is included and all of the flipchart slides for the 6 lessons.
